Beta Patch 12

We've updated our database to Beta Patch 12 (0.14.0.15343). Blizzard commented on the latest changes in a new 'Situation Report':

Our first Situation Report took a look at the changes with Patch 11 and while not a large patch, we wanted to continue sharing our insight on balance changes with Patch 12. Please keep in mind that we are continuing to keep a close eye on many of these changes to better gauge their effects and may not apply all of our planned changes into any one patch. This allows us to track the effects a bit better and layer in our planned changes to better set the pace of how they affect balance overall.

We have a few minor changes implemented as a part of the balance for this patch and are also planning some more ability changes for the zerg in the next.

- Radius decreased from 1.375 to 0.8125. Model size reduced to match new radius.

We have reduced the physical and pathing size of the Thor just to make him more useable. This will end up being a minor buff to the Thor (which he didn’t really need). We made the change just to make him less frustrating to use. We’ll be keeping a close eye on how this change plays out and if Thors become too dominant we will deal with them in other ways in future patches.

Beta Patch 11

We've updated our database to the latest Beta Patch (0.13.0.15250133).

Netharea from Blizzard's community team added some information in this 'Situation Report' posted on the official BattleNet forum:

Splash- Splash damage now originates from the center of the target, rather than the impact location near the unit in order to maintain more reliable splash damage.

We have changed how splash works for several units across the game to make it always hit the dead center of the target unit. Previously splash was centered on the front of the target unit. This makes splash generally more effective, though against certain large targets (buildings, Thors, Ultralisks) you will now not get any splash damage since the splash radius will be contained entirely within the radius of the large target.

-The build time has been decreased from 110 to 90.

We are trying to make this ship a little more useful. In reality this unit is easily countered by Corruptor, Void Ray, or Viking which may already be in play by the time it arrives, but we think it might see a little more play if it’s just easier to build.

Impressions of Wings of Liberty’s campaign

It’s been a dozen earth years since the release of the original StarCraft. Just when some of us were having doubts if we’d live to see the release day of the sequel, lead designer Dustin Browder confirms that the development team is getting ‘very, very close’ to submitting the master disc for Wings of Liberty (and already working on the launch day patch). Just to remind everybody that there’s more to the game than well-balanced and engrossing multiplayer (which is already playable in the ongoing beta), Blizzard invited press and community site representatives into its Orange County headquarters to dig a little deeper into the story mode.

Upgrading units
Dustin Browder kicked off the day with a quick tour of the Hyperion, the battlecruiser of protagonist Jim Raynor, the former space marshal turned renegade mercenary leader. Players can quickly access four points of interest in board stations by clicking on the destination’s name. We start in the armory, the place to ‘re-invest in your favorite units’ by using the upgrades console.

Researching technology

Terrans might be way behind the technology of Zerg and Protoss, but at least ‘they are clever and not above stealing’, according to StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder. By completing bonus objectives in campaign missions, players can earn Protoss and Zerg research points. Collect enough of them to unlock up to five technology improvements on each side.

For every five Protoss or Zerg points the player will have to choose. Though two tempting technologies are available, only one of them can be picked – the other one will remain locked for the rest of any given playthrough. ‘We worked hard to make them tough choices’, grins Dustin Browder.

The joy of story missions

‘Tons of effort’ went into each of Wings of Liberty’s 29 story missions, says StarCraft II Lead Designer Dustin Browder: ‘We are most proud of the solo campaign and how different those missions play from each other. They are carefully handcrafted; each of them has a unique feel and mission mechanics’. Assignment selection takes place on the bridge, where one can also replay older missions in order to complete bonus objectives and earn research points.

Browder goes into more detail by explaining the characteristics of four story missions. Welcome to the Jungle takes place on the planet Bel’Shir where the player is supposed to obtain seven Terrazine canisters. The catch: they have to be stolen from sacred Protoss temples. The locals are not amused and after a little while they begin sealing off temples. If more than five of the twelve Terrazine locations are shut down this way, the mission is lost. ‘It becomes a game of territories’, summarizes Browder. We have to defend our canister - stealing workers while disrupting temple shutdowns at the same time. The mini map shows the locations of all sites. We are also alerted if one location is about to being sealed off.

Interview with StarCraft II Lead Designer Dustin Browder

We attended Blizzard’s StarCraft II media event, which gave us a chance to play around with some new campaign missions, and learn more about gameplay mechanics such as research, upgrades and mercenary units. We also got to chat with Lead Designer Dustin Browder about cut units, concentration of coolness and the prospects of a release ‘very soon’.

Battle.net gets romantic for April Fools’ Day

Even by Blizzard’s own high April Fools standards, this is an exceptionally good one: The announcement of “Battle.net's new and improved matchmaking features” which help you to find that special someone in your life “to pwn noobs with”.

Don’t miss the promo video (featuring Battle.net honcho Greg Canessa) which effectively spoofs online dating and StarCraft lingo in 1:49 hilarious minutes. Free for all will never be the same. Don’t forget to click on “find matches now” for some great one-liners: http://us.battle.net/matchmaking.html

The other StarCraft-related April Fools announcement pays homage to the classic Sierra adventure games series King’s Quest. The of Blades will be starring in “Queen’s Quest” for the iPhone, where “you'll have the power of written language at your fingertips to save the Swarm from ultimate destruction”. As if a text parser and “16-color locations” weren’t enough, Blizzard also throws in some DRM humour: “Use the special 3d lenticular glasses to decode the margin text and find the keyword passphrase”.

Beta patch 7 data and YouTube videos

As Blizzard is tinkering around with the balancing in the StarCraft II beta, we’re always updating our content as soon as a new patch hits the servers.

Earlier today our database was upgraded to Beta patch 7 (version 0.9.0.14621B) which delivers nine minor changes to units and structures (longer-lasting Protoss , anyone?). You can always review the StarCraft II patch note history in the Tools menu at sc2data.com.

Our latest feature addition brings YouTube videos to unit, structure and map info pages. Thumbnails with up to four relevant video suggestions are displayed below the ‘Quick Facts’ section. A great way to experience a specific unit in action or explore new map strategies.
